Parking Lot/Traffic Flow Revisions Effective February 26, 2018 Lot/Traffic Flow Revisions Effective February 26, 2018

REVISED Traffic Flow Procedures at Ferndale Woods Elementary School – Effective Monday February 26, 2018

In consultation with the Transportation Consortium and our Superintendent, a revised plan to maximize safety in our Kiss and Ride and bus loading zones will take effect on Monday February 26, 2018. We require your complete co-operation to ensure the safety of students, staff, parents and visitors. Please review these procedures in detail and share this plan with care providers, grandparents or others involved in arrival/departure to and from school.

Parents/Guardians are encouraged to walk their children to school whenever possible. If it is necessary to drive, it is highly recommended that you park in the parking lot at the city park or park on the side streets adjacent to the school, where legal parking spaces exist. Please monitor the catwalk and city park in the winter as these areas are not maintained by the city in the winter.

Please be reminded that supervision at Ferndale occurs between 8:55 and 9:10. There should be no students coming to school or dropped off before that time.

Kiss and Ride Morning Routine:

Parents pull up to one of the three RED pylons one car at a time after 8:55 using the curb lane (purple) on the school side. Do not drive onto the curb (blue).

Students disembark on the passenger side ONLY.

If needed, blue vest staff will escort Kindergarten students to the supervised Kindergarten yard.

Yellow vest staff will assist as needed.

Parents can pull into the outside merge lane once they reach the green pylon.

No car should ever be driving in the outside (green lane) at any time nor should any car be put in reverse while in the Kiss and Ride area.

Pedestrian Morning/Afternoon Routine:

Students/parents/guardians enter/exit school property using the sidewalk at the north or south entry/exit points. No one is permitted to walk across the parking lot or across the bus loading zone at the front of the school.

Students who enter/exit via the sidewalk at the south entry point are asked to follow the sidewalk as it runs next to the school building to avoid walking next to the buses.

Kiss and Ride Afternoon Routine:

The entrance will be blocked until all buses have arrived by 3:30. There will be no vehicle movement until after 3:40 as the buses will be doubled up in the bus loading zone and the orange pylons will be blocking the crosswalk. Currently, no buses leave until 3:40. By having all the buses leave at once, it will mean that cars flow more smoothly through this area once the buses have departed. Please do not arrive early. Please never leave your car unattended as this is a Kiss and Ride. You will impede the bus procedures and will be not be able to move your vehicle.

Parents may use the curb lane (purple) to pick up their students at one of the three RED pylons only one car at a time beginning at 3:40 once the buses have departed. Never leave your vehicle unattended.

Parents can pull into the outside (green) lane once they reach the green pylon and the orange pylons have been removed from the crosswalk beginning at 3:40.

If special arrangements have been made with the K team, blue vests will escort kindergarten students to the Kiss and Ride to meet their parents at the RED pylons.

No car should ever be driving in the outside (green) lane at any time nor should any car be put in reverse while in the Kiss and Ride area.

Private providers such as Little Start, Bulldog, Champs, Black Belt, etc. are required to follow the same routines as parents/guardians.

AT NO TIME SHOULD THERE EVER BE VEHICLES IN THE OUTSIDE FLOW LANE. THIS IS FOR BUSES AND EMERGENCY VEHICLES ONLY. ACCORDING TO BYLAW THERE MUST ALWAYS BE AN AVAILABLE LANE FOR EMERGENCY VEHICLES.

If you need to pick your child up early, please be aware that there will be no cars entering or exiting the lot between 3:10 and 3:40.

If there is unsafe activity in the Kiss and Ride area, the area will be closed as is the case in other facilities.

Thank you for your diligence and support in keeping our students safe.

Joanne Merkley

Kerry Butler

Kindergarten Yard Yard
Kindergarten parents and guardians are asked to say goodbye to their children at the pylon line. The kindergarten yard is a supervised area in the morning and we are striving to promote independence and facilitate social interactions between children during this time. If there is an exceptional circumstance one day that necessitates you walking into this area, kindly speak to one of the duty staff members.

Thanks for your co-operation.

Parking Lot Flow/Drop Off 2017-2018 Lot Flow/Drop Off 2017-2018

Traffic Flow at Ferndale Woods Elementary School

As you know, Ferndale Woods has grown! In order to ensure safety and smooth flow, here are some reminders regarding pick up and drop off. Safety is always a priority and it takes the cooperation of staff, parents and students to ensure that the parking lot is a safe place for everyone.

Parents/Caregivers are encouraged to walk their children to school whenever possible. If it is necessary to drive it is highly recommended that parents park in the parking lot at the city park by the tennis courts or park along Nicholson Drive behind the school. There is a catwalk between Nicolson Drive and the school yard and this is the fastest and least stressful way in/out of the school. Parents may legally park there and walk their children to and from the school yard. There are also streets around the perimeter of the school where parking is permitted. PLEASE NOTE THAT THE CATWALK AND THE TENNIS COURTS ARE CITY PROPERTY AND THESE SURFACES ARE NOT MAINTAINED IN THE WINTER. PLEASE DO NOT USE THEM DURING THIS TIME DUE TO THE RISK OF SLIPS/FALLS.

There are numerous buses coming to and from our school. In order to ensure student safety, the Board's policy is that once a bus is on school property, vehicles will not be allowed to pass. Pylons will be placed accordingly. Once a bus has unloaded or loaded, the pylons will be removed and traffic can flow slowly through the lanes.

Cross Walk:

Pedestrians must enter the school property from either the north or the south sidewalks at the front of the school. It is essential that no one walks through the middle of the lot during the arrival/dismissal times. This includes the crosswalk between the parking lot and the school.

Parking Lot:

Parents may drop off their children at the Kiss and Ride but may not leave their vehicles

Students are to be let out on the curb side. Please do not let them out on the driver's side and never let students out from the non-curbside lanes where traffic flows.

Kindergarten children may be dropped at the Kiss and Ride to a blue vest teacher who will walk them around to the supervised kindergarten area; supervision begins 15 minutes before the first bell (8:55)

For the start of the year, parents who park in a designated parking place (not the Kiss and Ride) are welcome to walk their children around to the kindergarten yard (marked with pylons) to the supervising staff

For kindergarten students, pick-up will be at each kindergarten classroom door (parents may be on the school yard 5 minutes before the dismissal bell)

At the end of the day, parents may stay in vehicles and pick up their children at the Kiss and Ride

Please do not pull in to the curb side at the entrance to the driveway as the buses cannot turn when cars are there

Kindly avoid using cell phones in the parking lot in order to be fully alert at all times

PLEASE ALWAYS DRIVE SLOWLY AND NEVER PUT YOUR CAR IN REVERSE. WAIT UNTIL YOU CAN PROCEED FORWARD

YMCA

The entrance through the YMCA daycare gate is closed to Ferndale families. According to the Day Nursery Act, anyone entering the childcare property must first sign in at the YMCA office. The YMCA's program has grown and in order to maintain the safety and security of the small children in their care their playground area will remain closed to outside visitors.

School day

Everyone is reminded of the new school hours. The first bell rings at 9:10 a.m. and dismissal is at 3:30 p.m.

First Day

Students are invited to meet at the back of the school on the first day and staff will be there with grade signs. Students may congregate with their grade and staff will bring their students into the school when the entry bell rings.

Thank you for your support in keeping our students safe.

Joanne Merkley
